History of Aquaponics
Aquaponics is a food production system that is a combination of traditional aquaculture and hydroponics. Aquaculture is the raising of aquatic animals such as fish, prawns, and snails in a tank. Hydroponics is the cultivation of plants in water. The aquaponic system started in Ancient China (around the 6th Century), but at that time, the term “aquaponic” was not coined yet. Because of the high density of people in this country, almost everyone were very observant of the natural relationships that existed in the environment. Chinese farmers learned that livestock waste could be added to their fields to increase the production of vegetables and fruit-bearing plants.
